Eliminating Corner Darkening in Your Images: A Guide

Hello, everyone! Hope you all had a great Easter. (And maybe even watched some UFL Football, which is actually a lot of fun). I know that we often talk about subtle edge darkening, but we are not talking here about the bad type of vignetting caused by the lens.

Two different methods to eliminate it. Let’s go!

Above Here’s an illustration of the corner vignetting that we’re talking (the type caused by your lens). (It’s not only your lens; it’s many lenses. This is a very common problem, it is annoying, and is different from the edge darkening that we do for effect (which is all around the edges, not just the corners).

METHOD 1: You can eliminate edge vignetting by applying the built-in lens profiles. It literally takes one click. Click on the “Enable Profile Correction” button in the Lens Correction Panel, or the Optics panel (in Lightroom Cloud). Lightroom searches its database for a profile that matches the exact model and make of your lens. It then fixes, or at least partially fixes, the vignetting problem. Comparing the corners of the image where I checked the Lens Profile Correction box, with the corner in the previous capture, you can see the difference. It’s amazing what a single click can do. You can go a little further.

If you have applied a Lens profile and it hasn’t eliminated all the vignetting you can use the Vignette slider located at the bottom. Slide it right until all vignetting has been removed (as shown above where I have fine-tuned the remaining vignetting). ).

METHOD 2: This is the manual method, which means you can skip the Lens Profile and just click on the Manual tab at the top of the panel. You’ll then find the main Vignetting control slider (seen in the image above). This slider has a broader control for vignetting (not just fine tuning like the other slider) and right below is a Midpoint slide to adjust the location of the correction. The image was reset and I used the Midpoint and Vignetting sliders to make the adjustments you see.

Here’s a quick and easy way to remove edge vignetting. I hope you found this helpful.

Joe McNally will be leading a special Ellis Island Workshop

Joe offers a unique workshop that allows participants to visit areas of Ellis Island normally closed to the public. You can create some fascinating images.

Next one will be on May 25, 2020, and it is limited to 25 people. Two of my friends have attended this workshop and couldn’t praise it enough. Details are available here. ).

Enjoy your week. I hope you will stop by tomorrow to see my newest “Lightroom Tip Tuesday”.
